Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, world authority on the Great Barrier Reef will speak on on the urgency to 'climate rescue' the Great Barrier Reef at a 'Bradfield can do Better' webinar on Tuesday 7 December, 2021, 6-7pm. Ove Hoegh-Guldberg is Professor of Marine Studies at University of Queensland's School of Biological Sciences and is recognised as one of the world's 100 most influential people on climate policy.
He is internationally recognised for his work on climate change impacts on the Great Barrier Reef. He is also a coordinating lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that helped build the international consensus to keep global temperatures at 1.5°C. Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg grew up in Lindfield and attended Killara High School. Janine Kitson, Independent candidate for Bradfield, said: "Not only is Ove one of the world's leading scientist on the Great Barrier Reef, he also grew up in the Bradfield electorate. Ove and I both studied HSC biology at Killara High School. I remember Ove as a brilliant science student who always wanted to be a marine scientist. "Ove will give his assessment on the COP 26 Glasgow climate summit at my upcoming webinar."
Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, said in a statement prior to the COP 26 Glasgow climate summit statement prior to the COP 26 Glasgow climate summit: “The sobering analysis is that earth’s surface temperature will still increase to 3°C or more above the pre-industrial period, even if we were to implement all national and international policies for emission reduction today.”
Janine Kitson, concluded: "Three degrees of warming means 99 per cent of the Great Barrier Reef will be very likely gone. We need to stop pursuing this apocalyptic future by opening up more coal and gas fields. Let's support energy with net zero emissions by funding the transition to low emissions technologies and industries."
