Professor Charles Sampford, a director of the non-partisan Accountability Round Table, will share his vision for integrity reform and its implementation at an upcoming 'Bradfield Can Do Better' webinar on Thursday 4 November from 6-7pm. Professor Sampford has spent over three decades of research into integrity and governance reform in five continents, starting with the Fitzgerald reforms in the early 1990s. Professor Charles Sampford, said: Politicians need to be reminded that their powers are entrusted to them for the public interest. Politicians must be held accountable, for the exercise of that power - to the voters regularly and to the Parliament constantly. But Parliament cannot ensure accountability without a suite of independent, properly resourced integrity institutions including a Commonwealth Integrity Commission, Freedom of Information Commissioners, Ombudsman, Auditor General and trusted and respected agencies. It is too easy to forget the rich and crowded history of scandal, where the public trust has been abused. Integrity reform is not only necessary, it is entirely possible."
Ms Janine Kitson, independent candidate for Bradfield, said: "I am delighted that Professor Sampford, Foundation Dean of Law and Research Professor in Ethics at Griffith University, Queensland will speak at my next 'Bradfield Can Do Better' webinar - this time on the need for a strong Commonwealth Integrity Commission. Integrity in politics is my key campaign issue, along with the urgent need to take action on climate change and ensuring the ABC remains strong, well funded and independent into the future. I share Professor Sampford's commitment that the Federal Government must govern for the public's interest."
